Being a personal trainer for 5 years , i could only advise you this . That at this stage of growth , you will encounter the most muscle gain/height gain/strength gain . The effects of puberty on your body is like instant growth enhancement . What you have to do to capitalise on this is a combination of things .
1) Improve on sports performance ( you are at your peak at mastering motor skill related activities , so pick up basketball , take jiu jitsu , and anything , and you will learn fast)
2) Do not do treamills (why do it when you can do soccer), you wanna burn calories , play soccer with friends , run up a hill , box , or wrestle younger siblings . Confirmed high calorie burn.
3) Do not take power lifting classes ( yes its true , it will stunt your growth , epiphyseal plates at the end of your bones will seal if you lift very heavy weights , stunting your growth )

We all need to be fit and healthy, each with our own reasons for doing so. From looking good for our partner, to being able to play and have quality time with our kids; or maybe the doctor ordered us to get in shape. Obesity is the leading overarching cause of death in the westernised world and all too often we fail to think about what we are doing to both ourselves and our families.
To combat this obesity epidemic we find all sorts of quick fix pills, powders, and gadgets on the shopping networks that do little to actually help people take the fat off and keep it off. Of course the same could be said of the diet industry as well with so many different diets going around you have to choose from.
Now that we are well out of the holiday season, it is during this time that few of us will still be working on their new years resolutions and likely gone back to the old habits of eating or drinking more than we should and perform less physical activity than we would like.
What is truly needed at this time of year to get us back on track is some sensible proven health tips that people can implement today no matter what their present physical condition is like.
So here are four easy health and fitness tips for you to get started on…
1 Drink more water.
All too often we are borderline dehydrated and our bodies are working on the water starvation reflex where we are not flushing the toxins and junk out of our system. So be sure to drink at least two litres of water per day (if you are sedentary, more if you are active) and ideally not in one sitting. Spread out your water intake across the day. If you wait until you are thirsty then you are already borderline dehydrated.
2 Eat more often.
I bet you thought I was going to say eat less. While it is true that to lose weight you need to eat less calories than you expend, however you need to eat more often to get your metabolic furnace stoked up and burning right. Get it out of starvation mode and start the day off with some breakfast. Even an instant breakfast drink and a piece of fruit as we head out the door in the morning is a good start.
3 Get physically active.
Depending on your physical condition you need to be moving more. Use the stairs rather than the elevator, park farther out from the office or the store, go for a walk around the block, go dancing, play with your kids. Make it fun. Running is not the only way to burn more calories.
If you are really keen and like to monitor yourself, get a pedometer and see how many steps you take each day. Set yourself a goal for 10 000 steps per day and you will be on the right track!
4 Finally, determine your Why.
Decide why you want to get fit and healthy. Make sure your reason is big enough to motivate you through the times where you wont want to get out of bed or off the couch, as these slumps invariably happen.
Personally my reason is for my young family, where my son is nearly 2 years old now and my daughter only 6 months.
I want to stay fit and healthy so that I can get out and play with them on their schedule, particularly on the weekends where we have more free time together.

Approximately 33 billion dollars are spent on health and fitness products annually. WOW! 33 billion dollars! Not million…but BILLION! That’s astonishing. But, if this is true then why are so many people in the U.S. overweight? According to a study from the Center for Disease Control, 35% of the U.S. population is overweight and 27% are clinically obese. That’s well over half of our population. That’s amazing.
Being overweight has many detrimental effects, not only physically, but psychologically as well, leading to lower levels of confidence in ourselves and appearance. Carrying excess body fat can result in very serious health concerns including, coronary arterial disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and increased levels of stress. And these are just a few negative health issues, that can often times lead to additional problems.
With all of the information available to us these days, why are so many people still struggling with so many health problems that in many instances can be prevented? Well, it’s a combination of many things, including lack of proper education.
There is so much information available to us it’s hard to decipher what is the truth and what’s not. This can be very confusing, typically guiding the public in the wrong direction. Also, too many people are looking for the easy or fast solution with the least amount of effort. Unfortunately, there is not short cut, or magic exercise machine or trendy diet that is going to help you reach the desired health benefits that you want.
There are things that we can do to help us live healthier lives. For starters, we must change our behaviors. Most health problems are due to poor eating habits and being too sedentary.
We have to stop depending on high saturated fats and high sugary meals (comfort foods) when we feel down or want something that will make us feel better. When I have days when I’m stressed, or generally feeling down about things, I exercise. It’s a fact that when one exercises, the brain releases chemicals that not only increase our energy levels but make us feel great. The more habit forming we can make this than the better we will feel on a regular basis.
Developing good nutritional habits is a key component in striving for better health. Rather than jumping on the latest fashionable diet craze. Try to find eating healthier in ways that work on a more individualized level. One diet cannot possibly work for everyone on the planet, despite what the bestselling books want you to believe. We have to consider our genetic makeup along with our overall health issues and goals. Eliminating certain food groups is not the answer. There are certain macronutrients our bodies need to survive; fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Start out by eating many small meals through ought the day, preferably 5-6. I’m not saying to eat five meals that are going to make you so full that you can’t even move. But eat smaller meals, snacking between each one. For example, yogurt and a piece of fruit can be a wonderfully healthy snack. Fruits and vegetables not only make great snacks but they have extremely high nutritional value. They are loaded with disease fighting antioxidants. Plus, it’s almost impossible to eat too many fruits or vegetables. You would have to consume literally hundreds of pieces.
In addition, start the day by drinking a glass of water, this will aid in getting a jump on the hydration process. Follow that up with roughly 6-8 glasses of water throughout the day. If you are exercising regularly, drink more. But if you are just starting to form this habit, slowly begin by drinking 4 glasses daily gradually increasing your water intake as you feel comfortable. Your muscles are made up of 75% water. The more hydrated they are, than the easier it is for them to do their job. This holds true for your heart, as well. The reason for eating often is to increase your metabolism. Combining exercise with healthy eating habits will speed up your metabolism. This will turn your body into a more efficient fat and calorie burning machine.
Building lean muscle also increases our metabolism, thus burns fat at a higher rate. Muscle burns 9 calories per hour while your body is at rest, compared to fat, which burns 4 calories per hour while at rest. That’s more than twice as much! Can you believe it? By simply getting set up on an effective strength training program we can burn more fat!
Also, cardiovascular exercise is an important part to the health and fitness equation. Not only is cardiovascular exercise great for your heart, but it too burns calories. A general rule of thumb is that for every mile you walk or jog, you will burn roughly 100 calories. Not to mention the incredible benefits your body will discover from more efficient oxygen intake ultimately leading to a lower resting heart rate.
An important concept to keep in mind is to become more active. This might include walking more often, such as using the stairs rather than the elevator, or parking your car farther away while at the mall. Even performing some simple calisthenics, like jumping jacks, skipping rope, push-ups, sit-ups or anything that will increase your heart rate will help you get a jump on your fitness program. While watching your favorite half hour sitcom, try exercising during every commercial break. By simply getting your body moving, you will feel amazingly better. All it takes is some commitment, a little creativity and the desire to make you feel better.
For maximum results, a complete health and fitness program includes all three components; eating healthy, strength training, and cardiovascular exercise. But as I mentioned earlier, everyone has different genetics, health concerns, and goals. Therefore it is critical to first consult your doctor before starting any program and then contact qualified professionals, such as a nutritionist and personal trainer.

I have volunteered to run a booth at a health fair for children ages kindergarten through eigth grade. I will have 10-15 minutes for each grade. I can do whatever I wish, teaching them about health and fitness. Maybe do a few exercises with them, teach them the importance of a healthy diet, maybe talk about body image with the older children. I am researching because I want to really take this opportunity to do something great! Any advice, websites, etc would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks =)

You must consciously do things that help to keep you healthy. Carefully observe the following, put them into practice and you will surely record success in your health and fitness.
Eating habit: Are you the type that eats as many times as you desire? You need to caution yourself on the type of food you eat. An obese or overweight person should eat much of fruits, vegetables, protein, and fish, drink a lot of water and avoid eating in between meals. He should also run away from junk and juice as well as fast food and carbohydrate but rather eat much of protein.
Healthy diet: Healthy feeding habits will improve your mental and physical energy. All the essential nutrients like vitamins, proteins, minerals and little carbohydrates because of energy are needed to be present in your meals. Foods that are fatty and sugary should be completely avoided. Excessive food should also be avoided. Eat a little size regularly and you will be healthy and fit.
Exercise: This involves all bodily activities and help to maintain fitness and health. Exercise will boost your immunity and prevent diseases like obesity, heart attack, heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases. It improves your mental health, prevents and promotes self-esteem. Avoid vigorous exercise as this may cause health hazard. Simple jogging, walking and dancing are okay for you. You can decide to take stair case instead of elevator. You may decide to leave your car at park and trek to church or market.
Sleep and Rest: The struggle for the things needed for man’s survival is hindering many to sleep. If we must live a healthy life, we must find time to rest and sleep. We should have a plan and stick to it. The body rejuvenates and recovers when you sleep. To stay healthy, you must not overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion and you must find time to rest and sleep well. Though too much sleep may increase one’s size but taking vacation will help you to relax your mind and body especially if you are a busy type.
Nurturing the mind: We need to avoid worry over any issue such as finance, wealth, children and marriage so that we can nurture our mind. Anxiety neither brings any useful benefit to our body nor solve problem. We should not abhor fear and bitterness in our mind. Develop and practice what you love doing. Be it dancing, reading, singing, visiting, playing or anything that gives you joy. Reflecting on the creatures can help you to nurture your mind.

Now that you have made a commitment to take care of your body, both internal and external, it is critical to your overall health that you do it the right way. Here are some tips for both health and fitness that will help you lose weight, discover ways to maintain a better healthy lifestyle, and be in the best shape of your life – all the smart way!
1. Bicycling
When you ask many adults when the last time they rode a bike is, they cannot answer. Although bicycling is a favorite pastime, many adults do not take advantage of this great option for exercise. Not only does bike riding exercise the body and build a stronger cardiovascular system, it allows you to get out and enjoy nature, fresh air, and see new sites.
2. Jogging or Walking
Both jogging and walking are GREAT ways to get fit. Not only do they tone the muscles, relieve stress, create a healthier heart, and improve lung capability, they make you look wonderful, which in turns helps you get excited about doing other exercise for fitness.
3. Swimming
Swimming is an excellent way to get into and stay in shape. If you do not own a pool, many high schools have aquatic centers, or there is always the YWCA or YMCA, or your local gym. Many offer water aerobic classes that will help you tighten your body, lose weight, and get a good overall workout.
4. Tennis Anyone
Tennis is not only a fun sport, but also a great way to exercise. You do not have to be a Venice Williams to play; in fact, you do not even have to be good. Just running after the ball alone will help get you into shape. This is a great way to strengthen your cardiovascular system and lose weight. You can find tennis courts in just about every city and if you would like to play but have no idea how, lessons are reasonable.
5. Dancing
Dancing is so much fun and whether you enjoy a slow, Ballroom dance or a nightclub packed with people all moving to heart-pumping techno, as long as you are moving, it really does not matter what type of dance or music. The whole idea is to move your body. Dancing has long been recommended as an avenue to fitness.
6. VCR
If you have a VCR or DVD, rather than just using it for your favorite comedy or action-packed movie, try sticking in some good workout tapes. Even taking 15 minutes every day to workout will get you started. Try that for two weeks and you will be surprised at the results. Once you see that 15 minutes a day makes a difference, you will be encouraged to increase the time spent.
7. Abdominal Crunches
While you may not end up with a washboard stomach, you can do some things to get your abdomen in better shape. Crunches have long been a favorite for many athletes for the very reason that they work. Lying on your back with knees bent, keeping feet flat on the floor, cross your hands across your chest and then curl your torso, rolling from your sternum toward your hips. Do this slowly and start out with a set of ten crunches in three reps. In other words, do ten crunches, wait a minute, do ten more, wait a minute, and then do the final ten. As you get accustomed to these, you can increase both the number of sets and reps.
8. Squats
Squats are excellent for glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves. With your feet standing firm and spread apart about two feet, bend your knees slightly. Then, very smoothly, you will squat toward the floor without going all the way down. This usually takes some practice but within a short period, you will enjoy the benefits.
9. Tricep Press
Having firm arms is something that many people focus on when exercising. For an Overhead Tricep Press, standing on the floor with your feet about two feet apart, knees slightly bent, you will extend your arms over your head. Keep your elbows locked and then very slowly lower your hands behind your head. You want to do this with some type of weight, but small weights like one to five pounds. If you do not have weights of your own, you can hold a one-pound of vegetables, which will work perfectly.
10. Get to the Gym
Working out at home is a good option and for some people, they are committed enough to actually make it work. However, for the majority of people wanting to get into shape, the inspiration, competitiveness, and encouragement received from working out in a gym is the way to go. Although it will require a small investment, make the decision to find a gym that offers state-of-the-art equipment, qualified staff, and fun classes where you can enjoy working out.
